A view from the mountains

Skiing is a fantastic experience for the whole family to spend time together and this year was made even more special than ever having had to delay our Christmas treat two years running with Covid travel restrictions.

Something for all… the kids have time outdoors, off devices and my husband actually completely switches off and we are all physically present in the moment. The mountains are breathtaking as ever and the snow at the top groomed powder conditions, sunshine and a clear blue sky. The kids are raring to go to see who can reach the best ski time on “Slopes” a new ski speed app downloaded on our outbound journey (so perhaps not completely switched off from technology) but the healthy competition was great to see. Personally speaking, the time at the top of the mountain before the actual descent has the biggest impact. At 3300m high with views across the Alps it feels almost surreal. I wait for the rest of the skiers to depart knowing that there is at least 10 minutes before the next gondola arrives with the next 160 skiers – the peace is truly blissful, time for real reflection.

New year is traditionally a time for “out with the old and in with the new” but as I stood ready to approach the red run I didn’t feel the urge to focus on doing things better just doing things, having more adventures and making more memories. I saw the simple beauty in my surroundings and was blessed to be sharing it with those I love. Suddenly my goal wasn’t to race the kids, just seeing them having the time of their life giggling in the distance was pleasure enough.
